Use this helpful checklist as a reminder of the things you need to do before you move. Book the Movers. You can choose to have the movers pack your belongings or just the heavy items. It is always recommended that you pack your valuables and breakable items yourself. If and when choosing a reputable moving company always get insurance against any damage that might be incurred during the move. Another tip ask for recent moves that they made. Speak to their clients and get any feedback they might have to share. People are always willing to share their experiences even the bad ones. Always get a minimum of three quotes. Remember the old adage of- “ you get what you paid for”. If You Own Your Present Home Arrange to have the gas, water and electric meters read on the day your moving and have the bills forwarded to your new address. If your home is heated by oil or propane have the tank filled before the close. Provide your lawyer with the receipt so the new homeowners can reimburse you for the costs. If you rent a water heater or furnace, arrange for a transfer of the rental agreement to the new purchaser. Remember to have your phone, cable TV, and or water softener disconnected. If Rent Your Present Home Give ample notice to your Landlord that you’re vacating your home. Under the current Landlord/Tenant Act is you signed a 1-year Lease you need to give 60 days notice prior to the expiration of you lease. If you’re on a month-to-month lease you need to give 30 days notice. Also if the Landlord is holding a security deposit or your last months rent, make arrangements to have it returned or have it applied to your last month rental. At Your New Home Make arrangements for the gas and electric utilities, water softener, telephone and cable/satellite providers to be connected on the day the sale closes. Other Helpful Hints • Get a “ Change of Address” card from Canada Post, and send this out well before moving day • Have the post office re-direct your mail to your new address • Cancel any contracted services or pre-authorized cheques • Obtain a letter of introduction from your current branch to help establish new accounts. Transfer trust or bank accounts and securities. • Remember to change your address on your drivers license effective the day you move • Dispose of all flammable liquids as it is illegal for movers to transport them
